Many of us are working hard to reduce the clutter in our homes, so an influx of unwanted gifts during the holiday season is probably not going to help the cause, especially with kids in the house.
While too many toys can cause major clutter problems, the research also shows too many can be overwhelming for kids (and us). To help reduce the chaos this year, I’ve put together some gift ideas that might help you and your loved ones find gifts with more purpose and longevity, that the kids will love.
Experience Gifts
You just can’t go wrong with experience gifts. These gifts just keep giving and also mean you can make some great memories in the process. Try to lock in a date for the experience so it can be added to the calendar – the anticipation is the best!
- Sports Event Tickets
- A membership to a Science Centre or Zoo
- Cinema Vouchers
- Concert or Theatre Tickets
- A Special Day Out
- Enrollment to an activity (dance, karate, tennis lessons)
- A Hamper with their favourite treats
Art + Educational Gifts
Gifts that encourage creativity and learning are the best, especially the traditional non-tech ones. Just check in to see what’s actually needed so that you’re not contributing to an already overflowing craft space.
- Craft + Art Supplies
- Easel
- Experiment Kits
- Table + Chairs or Desk
The Ikea flisat table is excellent for toddlers and younger kids. You can add storage for art supplies or create a sensory table.
- Books
- Journal
Outdoor
Outdoor gifts are amazing if you have the space but try not to consume your entire space with equipment. It’s important to have space for running, ball play and cartwheels too! Steer clear of battery-operated toys – they’re a pain when the batteries run out and don’t provide exercise or help with gross motor skills.
- Trampoline
- Slide
- Sandpit
- Outdoor Kitchen
- Picnic Basket
- Fishing Gear
- Ride-on Toys
- Bike (balance bikes are fab for younger kids – my daughter had a Cruzee and loved it!)
- Scooter
- Skateboard
- Tent or Tunnel
Sport + Fitness
I love gifts that encourage our kids to be active and stay outdoors. My daughter got a skipping rope for her 6th birthday and it’s probably one of her most played with toys. In fact, it encouraged me to get a skipping rope for myself!
- Tennis Racket
- Skipping Rope
- Football
- Cricket Set
- Basketball Hoop
Tech
In my opinion, Tech that encourages healthy habits like exercise, communication and reading can only be good right?
- Watch
- Fitness Tracker Watch
My daughter has the Garmin Vivofit Jr.3 Tracker and wears it most days. She loves tracking her steps and bike rides.
- Digital Camera (check out the Vtech Kidizoom Studio).
- Kids E-Reader – Highly recommend Kindle Kids.
Classic Games + Toys
The classics never grow old, however if you find that already have an abundance then maybe skip this category.
- Traditional Board Games
- Wooden Building Blocks
- Tea Set
- Dress Ups
Something a little different…..
Believe it or not, kids really do value their space when it’s designed to cultivate their creativity. While younger children will hugely benefit from a clutter-free, organised play space, older kids love their bedroom space and little study nooks. So organise a little revamp surprise while their asleep or out and see the joy on their face when they return!
- Organised Play Space
- Bedroom Makeover
- Revamped Study space
Remember, if you’re buying someone else’s child a gift don’t be afraid to ask what they’re interested in or what they might need – it’s so much better when a gift is actually used!
